I get the idea behind the factory line approach—it’s efficient and effective. But that doesn’t mean people can’t be treated decently in these roles. The real issue is when management makes it unnecessarily worse.

Sometimes factory lines are more efficient and sometimes they aren’t. Modern just-in-time with team approaches have supplanted them at most automotive factories. Some of the human issues are caused by the reduction of the work to too a level of detail to be meaningful which creates problems. Having worked on different lines as summer jobs thru university where the management was supportive and helpful, the worst lines were those of the “twist one bolt or nut” variety.

Every breath you take

And every move you make

Every bond you break, every step you take

I'll be watchin' you

Every single day

And every word you say

Every game you play, every night you stay

I'll be watchin' you

Ah yes, the cyclical nature of bad management ideas - Taylorism, but make it AI-powered!

Freddy would be clawing his way out of the grave in excitement (or dread). Every few decades, we seem to rediscover the same oppressive workplace tactics, slap some shiny new tech on them, and presto, pretend it's innovation.

That irony is delicious almost as much as that cacao martini you're sipping. Will be having mine later. What better way to process the slow creep of AI-driven worker surveillance than with a drink in hand, watching the tide roll in?

Here’s to hoping Theory Y makes a comeback before 2075… or at least before your next mosquito bite.

'Most people evidently are lazy and distracted, not to be trusted.'... obviously 😏

Why would you trust your hiring and managing ability when the easiest way out is to monitor what your staff do?
